About Closter New Jersey
Closter is a borough in Bergen County, NJ. As of a 2018 census it has a population of approximately 8,582 people. The first land grant for the area that is known today as Closter was written in 1671. Closter was originally settled by Dutch people and its name comes from the Dutch language. It was pronounced with an “ow” sound, phonetically “klowster”. In the Dutch language klooster or “clooster” means “a quiet place”, a monastery or cloister. Closter became an incorporated municipality in 1904 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. It is bordered by the Bergen County towns of Alpine, Demarest, Emerson, Harrington Park, Haworth and Norwood.
